Tabernanthe Iboga

Tabernanthe Iboga is a perennial rainforest shrub native to tropical Africa. Indigenous to Gabon, Congo and Cameroon, it is now cultivated across equatorial Africa for its healing and psychoactive properties.

This powerful plant is endemic to humid tropical rainforests and it likes rich moist soil and good shade. Its small, narrow leaves are dark green; its pretty, delicate flowers are pale yellow or soft white. They give way to the distinctive bright orange, elongated oval shaped Iboga fruit.

Generally, the tree reaches a height of 2 metres after a few years, although given optimal conditions it can grow to a maximum height of 10 metres. The magic is in the root bark where the plant’s predominant alkaloid, Ibogaine, is to be found.
